Short Description
Summary Role
I am Full Professor at the University of the Algarve and Head of the Fisheries Biology and Hydroecology research group of the Center for Marine Sciences (CCMar). I graduated in Biology (University of Lisbon, 1982). My PhD dissertation focussed on the role of the Ria Formosa lagoon (South Portugal) on the biology of 4 Soleidae species. Since 1986 I have been engaged in several research projects, both at the national and international level. My research has been directed to fisheries resource management, studying the age, growth, reproduction, recruitment and diet of several fish and cephalopod species. My current research interests include the aquaculture of cephalopods and the optimization of the European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, as animal model in biology, seahorse and pipefish culture and conservation and the use of nuclear markers (microsatellites) to understand bottlenecks in cuttlefish culture and to study population genetics of long snout seahorse, H. guttulatus.
