Areas of interest
Phylogeny, phylogeography, molecular systematics, population genetics, gene flow, spatially structured populations, application of molecular markers to genetic assessment.
Experience

SENIOR RESEARCHER IN BEE, Biogeographical Evolution and Ecology GROUP, CCMAR 2009 to Present
The BioCon group has, together with the MAREE group merged into the BEE. The group presently includes 16 PhD students, 14 post-docs, 5 master students, and 9 technicians hired on research projects funds. We aim at understanding patterns and processes mediating population biology from ecological to evolutionary scales. Topics include phylogeography, population dispersal/connectivity, abiotic stress-driven evolution, reproductive ecology and roles of mating systems in population divergence and speciation. Biological models include marine plants, algae, mollusks, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds, using a variety of approaches, from molecular to experimental ecology and phylogenetic reconstruction.
RESEARCH GROUP COORDINATOR, BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION GROUP, CCMAR - 1999 to 2008
The BioCon group from its onset has targeted evolutionary biology as its main focus of work particularly engaged in phylogeography, population genetic and molecular systematics. The research has span on a diversity of biological systems, both marine and terrestrial, and topics, always from a phylogenetic perspective based on gene genealogies. Recently the group has joined the Marine Ecology and Evolution group, to form the Biogeography, Evolution and Ecology group. The research is hosted by the Center for Marine Sciences, an institution that is part of the CIMAR, which holds the statute of Associate Laboratory, recognized by the National Science Foundation Portugal.
HEAD OF THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT, University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal - 2003-2006
During 2000-2003 the Department of Biological Sciences was co-chaired by Rita Castilho. Who took the chair between 2003 and 2006. This position entails a number of responsibilities as drafting the teaching loads for each academic year and allocation of functioning budgets.
TENURED ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal - 1999 to present
Assistant Professor (“Professora Auxiliar com Nomeação Definitiva”) at the University of Algarve, Faculty of Marine and Environment Sciences, Department of Biological Sciences, Portugal.
INSTRUCTOR, University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal - 1987 to 1999
Instructor ("Assistente"), University of Algarve, Department of Aquatic Resources Sciences and Technologies (UCTRA), Portugal.
