We conduct applied research to inform the sustainable management of aquatic living resources:
- Sustainable management of fisheries & their ecosystems: Early life history & stock identification & Biostatistical & Quantitative Ecology: Biostatistical advice & analyses from local to national & international investigations. MFRC integrates both biological/ecological & statistical expertise in cross-disciplinary applications
- Conservation of marine biodiversity: Marine mammal research in marine bio-acoustics; including the development & testing of technology for bioacoustics & monitoring ocean noise
- Population assessment for small cetaceans, & the distribution and feeding ecology of baleen whales and basking sharks.
- Environmental toxicology: Development of technologies for the detection and measurement of the effects of novel pollutants Development and testing of novel biomarkers
- Innovative technologies to optimise seafood production:
- Characterisation of physiological responses in crustaceans
- Elucidation of inflammatory biomarkers in seafood species
- Development of immuno-stimulants for the improvement of fish health in aquaculture.
GMIT will act as an associate member of EMBC+. As an associate member we propose to offer Internships and Thesis opportunities to EMBC+ students. These students will be based at the Marine & Freshwater Research Centre in GMIT. Internships will normally be run in conjunction with the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group or the Irish Basking Shark Study Group; lecturing staff in GMIT are very active in these eNGOs and GMIT has a memorandum of understanding with the IWDG concerning research collaboration. Thesis opportunities will be available in the broad areas of fisheries biology, marine megafauna conservation and finally physiological responses of fish and shellfish.
