The CEM’s scientific research team currently comprises 28 permanent professors, all holding doctoral degrees, which head a number of research labs, helped by undergraduate, master, and doctoral students, and post-graduated staff. About 16 labs are interested in participating in the EMBC program: Seabirds (Ricardo Krul), Benthos and Mangrove Ecology (Paulo Lana), Marine Biogeochemistry (Eunice Machado), Organic Biogeochemistry (Cesar Martins) , Cephalopod Culture and Experimental Ecology (Erica Vidal), Fish Ecology (Henry Spach), Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction (Marcelo Dourado), Marine Mammals and Sea Turtles (Camila Domit), Ecological Modeling (Maurício Camargo), Sandy Beaches (Carlos Alberto Borzone), Marine Fish Culture, Zooplankton (José Bersano Filho), Coastal and Estuarine Processes (Eduardo Marone), Geological Oceanography (Marcelo Lamour), Coastal Oceanography and Remote Sensing (Mauricio Noernberg), and Socio-Environmental Studies (Rodrigo Medeiros). Currently, the CEM offers two undergraduate courses in Oceanography and Technology in Aquaculture; and two graduate courses, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Ocean and Coastal Systems (PGSISCO), which seeks to train graduate students in oceanography and related areas. The Centre for Marine Studies has a main building of 2000 m2, housing offices for teachers, library, auditorium, specialized and general laboratories, cold rooms and constant temperature rooms, administration sector, etc. There are three other buildings with classrooms, computer rooms and teaching laboratories, and a university restaurant. The research vessel fleet has several small and two medium-sized boats. The CEM’s library was established in 1982, and is part of the Library System maintained by the Federal University of Parana (UFPR), with specialized librarians to care and organize the collection. The technical and administrative personnel consist of about 30 career employees or contract by the UFPR FUNPAR. The Center for Marine Studies is superbly located in Pontal do Sul, a small seaside resort, just at the main entrance of Paranaguá Bay, one of the largest and best preserved estuarine systems of the Southwestern Atlantic. This allows for easy access to mangroves, salt marshes, extensive tidal flats, seagrass formations, rocky coasts in oceanic islands, exposed sandy beaches, etc. The Center for Marine Studies has been successful in approving major research projects from the Brazilian agencies such as CNPq and CAPES. It keeps sustained and fruiful interactions with international institutions, such as Paraná Hyogo, Brasil-Argentina, JICA, CNRS, Montevideo Group, Coastal Panel of GOOS/IOC/UNESCO; Millennium Assessment Initiative UNEP/GEF; International Ocean Institute; JGOF, etc. The CEM keeps formal cooperation agreements for education and research activities with Vigo University, Kiel University, Mar del Plata University
On a first moment CEM would be involved in the exchange of master students with the consortium universities for both internships and master thesis work. About 12 of our professors are willing to receive students within the realm of EMBC or send their own students to European universities. Our regular graduate courses may also be offered and attended by students from Europe. The above mentioned laboratories and the professors associated to the master’s course would receive students wishing to pursue studies at the centre for short or long terms. Students from PGSISCO would also have the opportunity to intern or do their thesis research within the EMBC+ framework.
The following research lines could be offered to talented and motivated students:
- Biology and ecology of costal and marine systems, with emphasis on subtropical estuarine ecology (mangroves, saltmarshes, seagrass formation, intertidal flats, sublitoral associations and so on), including both descriptive and experimental approaches.
- Biogeochemistry and marine pollution, with emphasis on the input and cycling of matter and energy in a large subtropical estuarine system. Specific research lines include organic matter cycles, organic markers as indicators of contamination, and analytical procedures for measuring and analyzing different environmental matrices (water, sediment and organisms)
- Coastal and marine dynamics (physical oceanography) with emphasis on remote sensing applied to the study of coastal system, optical properties of sea water, matter and energy exchange between estuaries and inner continental shelf, etc
- Coastal zone management, with emphasis on the interaction of natural and social systems as a necessary step for the understanding and solution of socio-environmental conflicts
