Marine sciences are the main research theme of Bremen University. It hosts the excellence cluster MARUM (Centre for Marine Environmental Research) and the international doctoral school GLOMAR (Global Change in the Marine Realm), both funded by the federal German government in its national initiative for excellence in science. BreMarE – Bremen Marine Ecology is a newly established Centre for Research and Education and it co-ordinates a very diverse and attractive study catalogue including EMBC and the ERASMUS MUNDUS joint doctoral school MARES as well as other international M.Sc. courses in Marine Biology, Marine Microbiology and International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology. Bremen University has very close ties with the associated world-class marine research institutions, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology and the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology. Most principal investigators at these institutes are at the same time professors at Bremen University and actively contribute to the inspiring teaching atmosphere, providing an exceptionally wide expertise in interdisciplinary marine sciences and a direct link from state-of-the-art research to academic education.
Bremen University will be a core partner for EMBC+, as it has been and still is for the previous EMBC programme. Bremen University will continue contributing to teaching the joint master course and issuing joint M.Sc. degrees together with the other partner universities for students, who successfully complete the EMBC+ programme. Special focus will be given to teaching courses for the EMBC+ modules “Understanding the structure and function of marine biodiversity” and “Toolbox for investigating marine biodiversity” during the first study year. In addition, lecturers of Bremen University will contribute to EMBC+ spring schools and offer topics for EMBC+ master theses. Together with the network of marine research institutions in Bremen (AWI, ZMT, MPI), the University of Bremen offers superb facilities and infrastructure for hands-on training in marine sciences. The unique combination of institutes working in polar, temperate and tropical marine ecosystems offers the ideal setting for comparative studies along latitudinal and temperature gradients. The biogeographic scope of Bremen University will cover the North Sea, European Arctic Seas and the open Atlantic Ocean. Bremen University will provide access to German research vessels, as practised already for EMBC with the EUROPA (European Universities & Research Onboard Polarstern in the Atlantic) training and research cruise in 2012.
