Elements cycles in the ocean : Forcings, disturbances, methods

EMBC+ MODULE 1: Understanding the structure and function of Marine Biodiversity

The course is organized under 3 main parts, each one composed of 2-3 boxes:
I. Forcings: What are the internal and external forcings of element biogeochemical cycles in the ocean?

  1. The microbial loop
  2. Land – Ocean interface and continental margins
  3. Bio - physical mesoscale and submesoscale coupling

II. Disrupted cycles: What are the main changes occurring?

  1. Desoxygenation & Eutrophication
  2. Acidification

III. Paleocycles and managed cycles: How were the biogeochemical cycles in the past and can we manage them in the future?

  1. Paleocycles
  2. Geo-engineering

Overarching these 3 parts and boxes, there will be a series of lab-works illustrating some of the advanced methodologies to study these themes.

In addition, there will be a 1-day workshop with scientists involved in IPCC to explain how biogeochemical cycles are integrated in global climate models.

 Basic knowledge on oceanography (mixed layer and circulation…), climate (atmosphere – ocean coupling,…) and ecology (photosynthesis – respiration, nutrients…)


 To have an in-depth understanding of external and internal forcings on biogeochemical cycles
To understand the main ongoing changes of biogeochemical cycles
To address the coupling between organic carbon production and hydrodynamism
To have a view on paleo-variations of the elements cycles
To understand the debate on anthropic carbon and marine geo-engineering
To know advanced analytical and modelling techniques to study biogeochemical cycles
