EMBC+ MODULE 2: Toolbox for investigating marine Biodiversity

1) Introduction to mapping and coordinate reference systems. Introduction to GIS. Software: map viewers vs. GIS. Setup of an open source GIS.
2) Types of data in a GIS. Vector and raster formats. Data sources. Introduction to spatial databases. Introduction to map servers and clients. Data input and output: link to open source analysis software.
3) Common operations with vector data: queries and data management. Field calculation. Spatial selection and overlays. Common geoprocessing tools. Basic operations with geometries. Projecting vectors. 4) Common operations with raster data. Raster warping and translating. Reclassify rasters. Raster algebra.. Spatial interpolation.. Mixed raster-vector operations.
5) Satellite remote sensing: Introduction and overview. Ocean color: basics, sensors and variables..
6) Satellite remote sensing: Infrared sensors and sSST. GHRSST and other sources of data. Microwave sensors: passive (ssSST, ssSSS, sea ice, wind speed, cloud liquid water, rain and water vapor content); active (altimeters, scatterometers and imaging radars).

User-level, overall ease with computers; basic knowledge of data processing and analysis. Basic understanding of major abiotic and biotic variables in marine science.


The students will gain competence and autonomy with GIS data types, data availability, software, methods and approaches, including accessing data from remote sensing servers servers (e.g. SEAWIFS, MODIS, AVHRR).
