The course aims to provide a first-order understanding of the biogeochemical cycles and interactions between the major elements (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon and iron) in marine ecosystems. We focus on interactions between the elemental cycles on the one hand, and on the link with marine organisms on the other hand. The course introduces experimental methodologies for research on the interactions between marine organisms and biogeochemical cycling, based on recent literature and own research experience.
Basic chemistry, physics, geology and ecology
The student will have a basic understanding of aquatic biogeochemical cycles and the relationships among these cycles. Student will be trained to give a scientific presentation for fellow students on a hot topic in biogeochemistry.
